i am having problem with the oil pressure in my xj and i dont know why i just cant figure it out.
the pressure is fine when i am moving but when i slow down or stop it drops to around 20 psi all the time i just cant figure out why it drops. could it be the oil pump? or sensor? what do yall think?

mechanical oil pumps don't pump as much at low rpms as they do at high rpms like when you are driving. Thats my best guess

I think it may also mean that the oil pump may be going bad if it has to work at high rpms to produce any pressure...

Thats the same problem I had in mine last winter J, remember??? I noticed antifreeze in my oil thrugh a special dye you can add to your radiator that is blackight sensitive, and I saw it in my oil a few days later... Tried to replace the head gasket thinkin that was it, but it wasnt....ended up being a crack in a cylinder wall toward the pan of the engine, and had to replace the block..now works fine... hope this isnt ur case, but it is a possbility

As Rob said it's a mechanical pump. Your motor has wear I'm sure. That's normal as long as you have good pressure at oporating speeds and your motor is not knocking at idle you have nothing to worry about.
